Navigating Elections without Postponing Democracy in the COVID-19 Era

June 11, 2020 at 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm UTC+0

The advent of COVID-19 has meant the postponing of over sixty elections worldwide, including in countries hoping to hold transformative elections, such as Ethiopia. From a critical perspective, many analysts have suggested that the postponing and modifications of election conditions reflect a deeper and troubling pattern of democratic erosion in some countries and authoritarian consolidation in others. At the same time, election practitioners and specialists have sought to offer advice to important stakeholders, including election management bodies, on how to hold elections safely. This live conversation focuses on the steps that are necessary to hold elections, standards that must be applied to safeguard democratic elections, the support that is required from international and regional stakeholders, and the approach needed to monitor the quality of elections.
